WP Engine

Making Waves uses WP Engine for hosting of Wordpress sites. WP Engine is a hosting solution tailored for Wordpress CMS.

Data backups – backup points and daily checkpoints

WP Engine has an automatic, daily backup feature to help ensure data is kept safe. These backup points can be accessed by visiting the WP Engine user portal, clicking on your install name and then clicking on “backup points.” These backup points contain your database as well as all theme, plugin, and core files. Please note, Wpengine restore point functionality does not include your uploads folder nor the Staging environment. Restore points are typically kept on file for about 30 days, but this can vary depending on the size of your site.

In addition to automatic daily backup, Wpengine also supports manual backup point. Manual back up points should always be used when deploying new code to production environment. Manual back up should always used when deploying to production. See section deployment routines.

Remember to always back up a site before deploying to a live production environment

CDN

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a service that can help the static content on your site (images, CSS, Javascript) load much more quickly.WP Engine provides a CDN services. How do I enable the CDN for a site?

To enable the CDN on a site, you’ll first log into the user portal. Select the WordPress install that you wish to enable, and click on the CDN link(1) on the left hand side. Then check the box for the domain that you wish to enable(2) and the Save (3). The list for domains on which CDN can be enabled is generated from the list of domains that have been attached to your install. This list is found inside the Domains link just above the ‘CDN’ link in your user portal.

Caching options and clearing cache

WP Engine comes with Object caching options. Object Caching is designed to capture queries to the database and store them in memory. This allows you to run an "expensive" query - a query that takes a long time - one time, and then reuse the results again. When used properly, Object Caching can give your site a speed boost by reducing the time that is spent accessing the database. To activate object caching select utilities under a install.

A clear page cache function is also available under utilities. This work similar to 'Clear all caches' on each install production environment.

Configuring DNS

It’s important that you do not configure DNS for your domain to point to WP Engine until you are truly ready for your site to be live on our servers. You can always use the ‘account_name.wpengine.com’ to test your site during the migration/development process; or, you can test a DNS change by using a Host File Edit to make your local computer see your domain as if it were already pointed to WP Engine.

Once you’ve configured your DNS you may use the Launch Phase within the Migration Checklist to verify that your DNS has been pointed to us; which you may find in your User Portal.
